I also tell them that their effort level in practice matters—and it's a two-way street. I promise the players at the beginning of each season that every day I will give them all I have to make them the best they can be. In turn, I ask that they give me 110 percent effort during every practice. Another thing I want my players to understand is that they all have a role to fill and that role is pivotal to our team's success. I tell them their only responsibility is to fill their role to the best of their ability. If they all do that, our team has its best chance of attaining peak performance. How do you determine the best role for each player? We don't want any player to feel like he has to do too much or go outside of his abil- ity or skill set. So recognizing which player fits where becomes a coach's major respon- sibility. This is especially challenging in high school, when you have to find which piece fits each hole using the players you're given. In college, you can form your own team and go out and find the exact pieces you need to complete the puzzle. 12 Coaching Management Preseason 2015 Coachesnetwork.com How does your emphasis on details and fundamentals reveal itself on the playing field? It really shows up on defense. I spend a tremendous amount of time on our team defense, such as stopping the bunt game or handling first-and-third offense—because that's going to determine whether you win or lose close ball games. The ability to take care of the baseball in crucial times separates the great teams from the good teams. We don't reinvent the wheel, however. My teams do the same things everyone else does, but we concentrate on doing them 10 times better through increased attention to detail. What is your approach to developing strong leaders? I was fortunate at Lambert to have excep- tional upperclassman every year I was there. That is due in part to the innate character of those individuals, but it takes many different people to develop them into true leaders. The coaching staff, administration, and parents all helped them foster characteristics such as selflessness, integrity, and a contagious work ethic that fed down to the younger players.
