Craig Anderson, Head Coach at Pine Island (Minn.) High School, researched the history of baseball in the town and led a special presentation before the local historical society. ed old stories and past seasons. "For example, I learned that on May 17, 1903, Pine Island took on Lake City," he says. "To get to the game the team traveled by train, then they took a steamboat up to Lake City and beat them 10 to zero. When they returned, they were treated like con- quering heroes." As his research continued, Anderson produced a seven-page packet that he handed out to the seminar's 60 attendees. "I included important dates, individual and team records, and fun facts about the Pine Island baseball tradition," he says. He also enlisted several guest speak- ers. "I created a starting line-up of pre- senters who were all part of our baseball history and had them talk about their experiences," says Anderson, who is Pine Island High School's Activity Director. "They included the president of the local baseball association, as well as graduates of the school from the 1950s and 1970s who spoke about their playing days. "We also had two football coaches who saved the baseball program in the 1970's, and two rival coaches who talked about playing against Pine Island," he continues. "We closed out the speakers with Clyde Doepner, who coached the high school team from 1965 to 1969 and is currently the curator for the Minnesota Twins." Afterwards, Anderson opened the forum and the speakers fielded questions from the audience. "One of our most popular topics was a look at the way equipment has changed over the years," he says. "It was an awesome night of baseball. As a student of the game, it was truly a fun project to be part of. "Preserving the history of the teams I've coached is something I've taken a lot of pride in," Anderson continues. "To be able to promote it and share it with peo- ple who also love the game was special." 10 Coaching Management Preseason 2015 Coachesnetwork.com BULLETIN BOARD Circle No. 106 Click Here to sign up for our free series of educational digital newsletters
